What exactly is a “woodgrain” finish on siding or trim coil, anyway?

From the outside, it looks like a flat sheet of metal with paint on it. The reality is more like embossing — rollers press a wood grain texture into the aluminum or steel before the coating goes on. That texture is what catches light and makes it read as “wood” at 10 feet, not just “brown metal.”

I’ll admit, I didn’t think the texture mattered much until our Q1 2024 quality audit. We had two coils from different suppliers — same color code, same specs on paper. Side by side on a fascia run, one looked flat, and the other looked like painted cedar. The difference was the embossing depth: 4 mil vs. barely 2 mil. (Note to self: always specify embossing depth, not just “woodgrain finish.”)

If the substrate isn't perfectly clean and the adhesive isn't rated for your climate's temperature swings, that foil will start lifting at the edges within 12-18 months. I've rejected a batch of 8,000 units because the peel strength test failed by 40% against our spec. The vendor claimed it was “within industry standard.” We rejected the batch, and they redid it at their cost. Now every contract includes a wet peel test and a weatherometer cycle requirement.
