The Surface Problem: Everyone Says "Yes" Until They Have You

Here's the pattern I kept running into. Find a manufacturer for a small-batch industrial PCBA order. The website looks professional. The sales rep is responsive. They say "no problem" to an order of 20 boards for an IoT industrial automation pilot. Then everything falls apart—lead times stretch, quality gets sloppy, or boards arrive with parts that weren't in the BOM.

I'll admit something uncomfortable: I assumed "same specifications" meant identical results across vendors. Didn't verify. Turned out each had slightly different interpretations of "industrial grade." One vendor's boards passed their own internal tests but failed in our enclosure because the capacitors weren't rated for the temperature range we actually run at. Instead of "is this industrial grade?", ask which inspection standard they follow. IPC-A-600 is the one worth knowing for boards. Ask about component brand requirements, temperature ratings, and what testing happens before shipping. If they can't name a standard, that's a red flag.

Pilot With Something Simple

My first order with any new vendor is now small and non-critical—often a batch of carrier air conditioner control boards, simple and low-stakes.
