Can You Paint Vinyl Siding? Yes—But the Total Cost of Ownership Says Something Else

In early 2022, our board asked me a simple question: "Can you paint vinyl siding?"

I'm the office administrator for a property management company. Not the most glamorous title, but I'm the one who handles the purchasing. Roughly 50-80 material orders a year across three locations. When that question came through, I did what I always do: I turned it into a spreadsheet.

Straight answer first: yes, you can paint vinyl siding. Acrylic latex paint, lighter colors, proper prep, and it'll stick. I've signed off on enough invoices to know the mechanics. But the question the board should have asked wasn't "can we paint it?" The question was "what does that decision cost over the next 15 years?"

Bottom line for me: yes, you can paint vinyl siding. But "can" is the cheapest word in that sentence. The more expensive question is what it costs to repaint, re-prep, and re-explain every five years. When I ran the TCO, woodgrain aluminum trim coil won. It cost us more to begin with, and less to own. That's the trade I'll make every time.
